These narrow band units are capable of very high unloaded Q's, e.g. 50,000 at 10 GHz. This makes them suitable where very low loss is required or high power handling is of primary importance. The operating mode is chosen to give the best performance for each application.
The cylindrical mode resonators are coupled with small rectangular apertures which are positioned to suppress the transmission of unwanted modes through the filter. Each resonator is tuned using a cylindrical plunger from one end. Temperature stability can be maintained using invar but where the unit needs to be lighter aluminium is used.
Both materials are copper plated. Waveguide or coaxial interfaces can be supplied, waveguide coupled through a rectangular aperture and coaxial adaptors coupled directly into the first cavity.
